Over the s ummer and through this fall cons truction volunteers at the work s ite for Shannon Hendricks ’ home have been bles s ed with lunches s erved by the ladies of St. Paul ’s Epis copal Church. They provide meals three and s ometimes four times a week for our hungry volunteers ! The ladies at St Paul ’s as k for nothing in return except for the joy of s erving. In fact, they probably wouldn’t want me writing this article but we all feel they des erve recognition.
The s tory begins a few years ago when a neighboring paris hioner of St. Paul ’s Epis copal Church wanted to donate her hous e to the church. Through a s eries of events the hous e along with another hous e next to it were donated to the City of Virginia with the unders tanding that the homes , which were in s evere dis repair, would be demolis hed and then the land given to Habitat for Humanity.
Meanwhile, during a news letter folding event, Joie Swens on, a St Paul ’s Epis copal congregation member, began chatting with a pros pective homeowner, Shannon Hendricks . Shannon began telling Joie where her hous e was going to be built, right next to the Epis copal Church. This got Joie thinking about how the church could help the Hendricks family. She decided to talk to her friends at church about providing meals for the workers during the building proces s . Little did s he know how much of an impact and a bles s ing s he and her friends at the church would be to Shannon and the Habitat volunteers .
To date, the ladies of St. Paul ’s Epis copal Church have s erved almos t 800 meals to hungry volunteers working on Shannon Hendricks home. They are a quiet and humble army, s erving up not only a hot lunch but cheerful s miles and energy to keep the workers going through the day. We are all truly bles s ed to have been s erved s o faithfully by thes e ladies . Pleas e thank them next time you s ee them.
It is always a bles s ing to feed hungry volunteers . Something about giving new energy to hard working hands and feet s eems to warm the giver as much as thos e receiving. A lunch for a Habitat volunteer group can be as s imple as ham s andwiches , s loppy Joe s , or s ome hot dogs and chips . When prepared with love and care jus t about any lunch will keep volunteers on the build s ite and energized to go on! Pleas e call us at the Habitat office if you would like to join in this hos pitality minis try, 218.749.8910 or toll free, 866.749.8910.
